Define the ‘memory’
Process of storing and retrieving information
What is encoding?
The process of changing information into a readable format so it can be stored
What is storage?
Holding information in the memory system
What is retreival?
Recovering information from storage
What is visual encoding?
The process of encoding images. The creation of mental pictures is one way people use visual encoding.
What is acoustic encoding?
When memories are stored in terms of what they sound like
What is semantic encoding?
This refers to meaning. Semantic memory is your ability to understand and use concepts
What is recognition?
E.g. doing a multiple choice and recognising the answer, or seeing a lineup of people and picking the correct person
What is cued recall?
When you’re trying to remember, then you get a clue/cue to help you remember it
What is free recall?
When you retrieve it without any cues or clues
