What is an interview?
A method by which the researcher collects data by asking questions directly to a participant. They usually involve human contact, but can be done over the phone. Normally, the interviewee’s responses are recorded, sp the researcher can play back the content and analyse the information given.
What are three types of interviews?
Structured, semi-structured and unstructured
What type of interview is this -
The interviewer reads out a list of pre-prepared questions. The interviewer works through the list.
Structured
What type of interview is this -
It is more like a conversation. There will be a general aim at the beginning of the interview, but questions are not planned. The interviewer develops new questions based on the answers given.
Unstructured
What type of interview is this -
Some questions have been planned in advance but the interviewer will follow up questions at certain points.
Semi-structured
What are some advantages to interviews?
They provide a lot of data
It is detailed
The interviewer can follow up questions
Questions can be rephrased if the person doesn’t understand
What are some disadvantages to interviews
It is hard to express views, especially in sensitive topics
People can lie or give socially desirable results
