What is a self report?
Where the participant answers questions about themselves (beliefs/opinions)
What is a questionnaire?
A set of questions used to find out a person’s thoughts, beliefs, or opinions on a topic. It is a method of data collection, where respondents record their own answers to a preset list of questions
What is an open question?
A question where people can provide their own answer rather than choose from a fixed range of responses/produces qualitative data
Give an example of an open question
E,.g. Who is your favourite teacher and why?
What is an advantage of an open question?
It allows freedom to express opinions/answers are in greater depth, as it is qualitative data
What is a disadvantage of an open question?
It is difficult to analyse and put into graphs as it is based on words and opinions
What is a closed question?
It is a question with a fixed range of possible answers/produces quantitative data
What is an advantage of a closed question?
It is answered quickly/easy to analyse/displays data on graphs as it produces quantitative data
What is a disadvantage of a closed question?
It doesn’t provide the researchers with much information
Give an example of a closed question?
Do you prefer dogs or cats? 1.Dogs 2. Cats
What makes a good question?
Includes both open and closed questions, clear and tidy structure/presentation, easy to read, measurement scales correct and clearly labelled, clear questions, no misleading or leading questions, enough space given for answers, does not include sensitive questions, suitable length and questions can be easily analysed after.
