1) they encourage and reproduce hierarchical in egalitarian relationships:
- children are socialised to accept authority, obedience and power- they have practiced and observed it from a young age.
families are based on in - egalitarian (unequal) relationships- have a habit to accept them
families = the basic foundation of society - so if unequal relationships are allowed then it acts like a barrier from development
how does safety value dampening down discontentment contribute to capitalism
2) families act as safety value dampening down discontentment:
- zaretsky(1976) capitalist societies work make members feel not apart and exploitive - leads to discontentment (temporary fix)
- families seem to follow this cycle- making the member feel that is okay to be oppressed- this leads to allows them to have unequal structures in the first place by them not rejecting it
what does reproduction of labour contribute to capitalism
3) reproduction of labour
- family provide safety- families produced this relaxation, refreshment, rest and recreation- makes member to feel fresh for tomorrow work force- being fit and heathy- more productive
how does unit of consumption contribute to capitalism
families was a unit of production- it has changed to unit of consumption
feel the urge to spend more- children who lack latest clothes or “must have” gadgets are mocked and stigmatised by their peers
increase economy = capitalism
