functionalism
showing interest in how social order is possible or how society remains relatively stable
what are Durkheim’s functionalist views on society
his theory is based on that society has to have an order and needs to stable
his goal was to explain how society order is created and maintained
how did sociologists like Durkheim used the organic analogy to explain the different parts of society
they used it to help them explain a comparison between society and the human body
the human body have different organs that have particular functions- if the functions worked properly together then body will be healthy; society is like too- split into smaller sections- used correctly then can achieve social order and stability
social solidarity
refers to the ties in society that bind people together as one
value consensus
if member of society have shared values means that they will have similar identity
equilibrium
dynamic working balance among its interdependent parts e.g. if daughter is playing the correct role then society will be stable
