The mammalian heart Flashcards
Which direction do arteries and veins travel, in regards to the heart?
-arteries=away
-veins=towards
What word always relates to the lungs?
pulmonary
Which vessels carry deoxygenated blood?
vena cava and pulmonary artery (right side)
Which vessels carry oxygenated blood?
pulmonary vein and aorta (right side)
What are the two types of valve?
-semilunar
-atrioventricular
How does deoxygenated blood enter the heart?
through inferior then superior vena cava
How does the deoxygenated blood get to the right ventricle?
goes into the right atrium, then through the atrioventricular valve (tricuspid)
How does the deoxygenated blood leave the heart?
passes from the right ventricle, through the semi lunar valve (pulmonary valve) and into the pulmonary artery
How does oxygenated blood enter the heart?
through the pulmonary vein
How does the deoxygenated blood get to the left ventricle?
goes into the left atrium, then through the atrioventricular valve (bicuspid)
What is the name of the space between the two ventricles?
septum
How does the deoxygenated blood leave the heart?
passes from the left ventricle, through the semi lunar valve (aortic valve) and into the aorta
What is the bottom curve of the heart called?
the apex
What are the inelastic connective tissues that can be found in the heart?
tendinous cords
What may be the consequences of a hole in the septum?
-deoxygenated and oxygenated blood mix
-less pressure is generated by the heart
