The Male Reproduction System and Function Flashcards
Penis
Deposits semen into the female vagina during ejaculation. And avoid urine through the urethra.
Corpus Cavernosum
Two long pieces of erectile tissue running along the penis. When sexually excited, the blood rushes to this tissue, causing an erection.
Corpus Spongiosum
Erectile tissue used to help the Urethra not collapse during an erection.
ANS ( autonomic nervous system)
Controls erection/orgasm
PS(Parasympathetic system)
Responsible for erection(blood flow)
SS(Sympatric system)
Responsible for orgasm and ejaculation.
The Testicles
Produce sperm cells and the male sex hormone ‘testosterone’
Scrotum
Raise and lower to adjust temperature of testes. Sperm are produced best 2 to 3 degrees lower than normal body temperature. High temperature will cause malformed sperms.
Interstitial cells of Leydig
Responsible for the production and secretion of testosterone, stimulated by LH.
Epididymis
Coiled tubes on the testes in which sperm cells mature(7 weeks)and are stored for ejaculation. Malformed sperm are killed here by the immune system.
The Vas Deferens
Smooth muscle tubes; carries sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct(end of vas deferens).
VASECTOMY-cuts or clams vas deferens
The Cowper’s Gland
Fluids are released into the Urethra during sexual excitement. The fluid cleans and lubricates the Urethra for ejaculation.
Seminal Vesicles
Secrets fructose sugar(to energize the sperm) into the semen to improve sperm motility
Prostate Gland
Majority of seminal fluid is produced here. The fluid is alkaline to reduce the acidity of the vagina. This structure is very susceptible to cancer.
Seminiferous Tubules
Hollow tubes in the testes in which spermatogenesis occurs
