Reproduction strategies Flashcards
Sexual and Asexual Reproduction strategies
Binary Fission
Mitosis: a single celled organism doubles its DNA and splits in two
Budding
(In single cell organisms) The DNA duplicates and a new individual is formed by a bud growing from the body of the “parent”. (In multicellular organisms)the growth would pinch off and grow
Fragmentation
A parent organism breaks into fragments, each capable of growing independently into a new organism
Parathenogenesis
The offspring develops from the egg or female gamete without the prior fertilization from the male gamete
Pro and Con of Asexual Reproduction
Pro: takes less energy and less time
Con: variations only come from mutations
Internal Fertilization
The gametes are delivered to the female internally. Ex(humans)
External Fertilization
Gametes meet outside of the bodies of the reproducing bodies. Ex(fishes)
Pro and Con of Sexual Reproduction
Pro: variation of off spring occurs from different genes and random variations
Con: requires lots of energy, need to find a mate, copulate, etc
