When thinking about the context of King John’s problematic reign, how did his predecessor set him up for failure?
Richard had spent racks on the crusades and had been bailed out. this meant that John had inherited massive financial problems.

Pope wanted Stephen Langton as AOC, but John didnt and so stopped him from coming to England.
The pope was like F this and stopped bishops and priests from being able to conduct church services.

Raised their tax to fund reclaiming Normandy after he lost it, but couldn’t reclaim. So nobility were so annoyed but if they didnt pay they could be imprisoned.
What was the Magna Carta the first document to do?
Impose rule of law
Allowed wealthy landowners to have a say on taxes.
Did John adhere to the Magna Carta?
Although he agreed to the terms (probs to appease the peasants), he broke the rules.
Give a couple of examples of items on the Magna Carta…
Someone accused of a crime could not be imprisoned or punished without having a fair trial first.
The king could not raise new taxes unless he had the agreement of the barons.
A council of 25 barons was set up to ensure the king followed the rules the charter put in place.
