The Lymphatic System Flashcards
Functions of the lymphatic system
production, maintenance, and distribution of lymphocytes; returns excess fluid from the tissues to large veins near the heart; transports lipids from the digestive system to large veins near the heart
Lymphatic vessels all converge to form to large vessels
Right lymphatic duct – delivers lymph fluid from the upper right side of the body; and the thoracic duct – delivers fluid from the rest of the body; both empty into the subclavian veins
Characteristics of lymphatic organs and tissues
relatively soft tissues; have fibrous capsules; have lots of reticular tissue within; contain many lymphocytes
Lymph nodes
Small, oval shaped structures that can be anywhere from 1 to 25 mm long; lymph fluid will pass through the nodes as they progress through the vessel system
Function of lymph nodes:
to filter the lymph as it passes; filters bacteria, dead cells, and cell debris from the lymph; will attack any potential pathogens
Thymus
bi-lobed organ located just behind the sternum above the heart; produces lymphocytes
Spleen
located on the left side of the abdomen; very highly vascularized
Functions of the spleen
filters foreign substances from the blood; recycles worn out red blood cells and stores iron; serves as a reservoir for spare red blood cells; supports a large population of lymphocytes
Tonsils
located in the throat region, along the walls of the pharynx; first line of defense against ingested pathogens; contain a large concentration of lymphocytes
