The LTM Flashcards
What did Tulving propose in 1985
Said that the MSM was too simplistic and inflexible and suggested that the LTM exists in three stores.
What is episodic memory?
It is a declarative memory which is specific to an individual.
Time stamped and requires conscious efforts to be recalled.
Right prefrontal cortex
What is semantic memory?
It is a declarative memory which is based on the memory of facts.
Not time stamped and is linked to general knowledge.
Left prefrontal cortex
What is procedural memory?
It is implicit.
Refers to knowing how to do something such as ride a bike.
Not time stamped.
Done without consciousness.
Located in the basal ganglia.
Evaluation of the LTM
(strength)
Research support from clinical evidence from Clive and HM.
Both suffered from amnesia but some parts of memory were still intact.
Clive could remember to play the piano (procedural) but didn’t know when he learnt to play (episodic). Had a less than 30 second memory.
HM could remember the concept of a dog (semantic) but couldn’t recall whether he had owned one or not (episodic)
Evaluation of the LTM
(strength)
PET scans by Tulving (1994) suggests that different memories are stored in different parts of the brain.
Scientific
Objective way as it is not influenced by bias.
Evaluation of the LTM
(strength)
Belleville (2006) demonstrated that episodic memories could be improved for older people who have mild cognitive impairments.
Compared results with control group.
Those who received memory training had better episodic memory.
Devise appropriate treatment.
