the localized electron bonding model (3.8) Flashcards
what does the localized electron (LE) model tell us about electrons?
it assumes that a molecule is composed of atoms that are bound together by sharing pairs of electrons (bonds) using the atomic orbitals of the bound atoms (official def)
OR
it tells us electrons exist between the atoms in a molecule and they are shared by pairs between atoms or transferred to another atom through the atom’s atomic orbital. (simplified version)
what are two places in an atom where the electrons can be localized?
on the atom and in between two atoms.
where are lone pairs localized in an atom?
ON an atom.
where are bonding pairs localized in an atom?
IN BETWEEN the atoms/ in the space BETWEEN the atoms.
