lewis structures (3.9) Flashcards
what does the lewis structure show?
how valence electrons are arranged among the atoms in the molecule OR the valence electron arrangement of atoms in a molecule.
what kinds of electrons are included in a lewis structure?
valence electrons ONLY.
what is the lewis structure of KBr? explain why it’s like that.
[K]+
[Br+8 valence electrons around it]-
K is a metal with 1 valence electron and Br is a nonmetal with 7 electrons. in order bond, K has to lose its electron and give it to Br in order to become a molecule. they form an ionic bond and as a result, K becomes a cation (cuz it lost an electron) and Br becomes an anion (cuz it gained an electron)
how many electrons does hydrogen to form a stable molecule?
2 electrons or a pair.
which atoms always follow the octet rule in forming stable molecules?
carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine.
how many bonds does helium form? or how many electrons does helium need to form a stable molecule?
TRICK QUESTION! helium is a noble so it already has a full valence electron shell and therefore does not need to form any more bonds.
