The liviing world- Tropical Rainforests, Adaptations to rainforests Flashcards
Describe the forest in tropical rainforests
Emergent trees - Tall trees 40m
Canopy - dense part of the forests 30m
Under-canopy - 15m, snakes, frogs
Forest floors - very dark, jaguars
What’s the climate like in tropical rainforests?
Warm and wet all year
annual precipitation
27 degrees on average(temp)
Mention and describe the vegetations there?
Dense lush vegetation
tall trees
rapid plant growth because of high humidity
Descibe the soils
Soils are thin and poor because the heavy rainfalls wash the nutrients away
However, vegetations are lush because of rapid nutrient cycle
How do trees adapt to the rainforest?
Tall - sunlight
Waxy leaves - water drips faster
Strong roots - holds the tall trees up
How do animals adapt to the rainforest?
Poison frogs - colour tells predators they are poisinous
Colourful birds - Parrots and Tucans, attract mates
Strong beaks and claws - Break nuts and grab branches
Slots - claws grip branches
move slowly to avoid being spotted by predators
Monkeys - tails grab on branches and for balance
