The limbic system Flashcards
The Limbic System
Network of structures in the brain thought to control emotional regulation including agression, comprised of the amygdala and hypothalamus which are thought to control and supress fear responses.
Amygdala
detects external threats and creates our responses to them including aggression as it creates an autonomic fight response, which may be supressed by other structures in the limbic system
Amygdala and aggression
Research has shown hightened amygdala activity during aggressive responses and that those with an abnormal limbic system are more prone to aggressive behaviour.
+Supporting research, Raine
Found murderers have asymetrical amygdala abnormalities-one side has greater amygdala activity and the other side lower suggesting damage to the amygdala or limbic system causes heightened aggression
What did raine find
That murderers have amygdala abnormalities suggesting it may cause agression
Limitation-Correlational
Cant establish if higher activity is a cause or effect of aggression
Reductionist
-Also biologically reductionist and overlooks environmental explanations.
