Serotonin Flashcards
Neurotransmitters
Chemical messengers which inhibit or exhibit activity in neurons and control important functions, thought to regulate mood and self control
Serotonin
Neuotransmitter with a calming effect that slows down neuron activity, lower levels of serotonin have been implicated in aggression however research is inconsistent and has also found higher levels may cause heightened aggression.
How does low serotonin cause aggression
Aggressive responses cant be inhibited as well, less calm, less self control and more impulsive
Cheruk
Found giving SSRIs-serotonin increasing drugs to those with high aggression decreased aggression
Huber
-Found crawfish with high serotonin levels were more aggressive
-Contradicting research
High serotonin levels have also been implicated in aggression, e.g Huber found giving a crawfish drugs which increase serotonin levels makes them fight more but it lacks ecological validity
-Deterministic
Assumes we have no free will or control over aggression and our behaviour is pre determined purely by neurotransmitters.
-Reductionist
Reduces behaviour to a singular chemical and overlooks the roles of other chemicals like tesosterone, overlooks environmental and genetic factors.
