Social explanations Flashcards
Frustration Aggression Hypothesis
Frustration is a negative feeling we experience when we are blocked from achieving a goal we want, aggression is a response to this feeling as it acts as a release
Who proposed the frustration aggression hypothesis
Dollard
Factors influencing if frustration will cause aggression
- Proximity to the goal-the closer to the goal we are when we are blocked, the more aggression we will feel
- If aggression will remove the barrier
Research support-Harris
Found that the closer people were to the front in a queue when they were cut in line, the more likely they were to be aggressive
Limitations
-Can only explain contextual aggression
-Cant explain why all frustration doesn’t lead to aggression
-Overlooks biological factors.
Social Learning theory
-We learn aggression like other social behaviours-through observing a role model being reinforced for a behaviour we will experience vicarious reinforcement encouraging us to imitate it
Mediating processes in SLT
-Attention, retention, motivation, reproduction
Slt-Guerra
Found children in violent areas with more exposure to violence were more likely to show aggression
