The Leg Flashcards
What is osteomyelitis?
Infection of bone following trauma
What is the intraosseous membrane?
Fibrous joint which units tibia and fibula. Separates anterior and posterior compartment muscles and acts as attachment site.
What movements are the anterior compartment muscles primarily involved in?
Dorsiflexion (up) + inversion of foot
What is the blood supply to the anterior compartment, and where does it arise from?
Anterior tibial artery. Arises from popliteal artery and enters anterior compartment through interosseous membrane foramen.
What is the nerve supply to the anterior compartment, and where does it arise?
Deep fibular nerve. Arises from common fibular nerve which arises from sciatic nerve.
Where do the tendons of fibulas longus and brevis pass in relation to the lateral malleous?
Posterior to the lateral malleolus
What is the blood supply to the lateral compartment?
Posterior tibial and fibular artery
What clinical problem is seen if the common fibular nerve is injured?
Footdrop: patients in constant plantar flexion and unable to dorsiflex.
What is the blood supply to the posterior compartment?
Posterior tibial artery
Where is the posterior tibial pulse palpable?
Posterior to medial malleolus
In what order do the nerves and muscles pass posterior to the medial malleolus?
Tom, Dick And Nervous Harry Tibialis posterior fDl tibial Artery tibial Nerve fHl
