The Knee Joint Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of the patella?

A

Enhances the leverage that quadriceps tendon can exert on femur to aid extension.
Protects anterior knee from trauma.

Q

Why are patellar dislocations more common in females than males?

A

Females have larger Q angle, central pull of quads is stronger. (Q angle = angle of femur coming into knee females have wider pelvis so larger angle).

15
Q

How does popliteus aid flexion?

A

Begins flexion by laterally rotating femur on tibia to unlock knee. Locked position = femur medially rotated.

Q

What is the unhappy train of knee injuries and how does it occur?

A

Medial collateral ligament tear, followed by medial meniscus tear, followed by ACL tear. Caused by excessive twisting of flexed knee.
