The Learning Approach Flashcards
Bandura suggested that much of our learning us from direct experience. However, we also learn…
Indirectly, through observation and imitation of others within a social context.
What are the 4 mediation all processes involved with the SLT?
- attention
- retention
- motor reproduction
- motivation
Outline modelling.
For social learning to take place, an individual must carry out (model) the behaviour or attitude.
These can be live models (teacher/parent) or symbolic (character on TV).
These models provide examples of behaviour that are observed and van be imitated later.
Outline initiation.
Unlike the slow process involved in conditioning, whole patterns of behaviour can be imitated if a model is provided.
Imitation is most likely to occur depending on the…
- characteristics of the model
- observer’s perceived ability to perform the behaviour
- the observed consequences of the behaviour
A person is likely to become a role model if compared to the model they are…
- same gender
- same age or older
(possess similar characteristics) - high status
- likeable
(if model is seen in a positive light)
How is this approach different to classical and operant conditioning?
SLT takes into account the thoughts and mental processes of an individual. Therefore, it’s seen to have cognitive aspects.
In the study by Bandura et al (1961), what were the 3 groups?
GROUP A (24 boys and girls) - observed a non aggressive adult model in a room full of toys for 10 mins. The adult ignored the bobo doll and played quietly with other toys.
GROUP B (24) - observed an aggressive adult model in a room full of toys for 10 mins. The model kicked and punched bobo doll, hit it with a toy mallet and showed verbal aggression by shouting “pow”, “sock it to him”, “hit him in the face”.
GROUP C (24) - control group who did not observe a model by werr allowed to plays other toys.
