A

1931- the Japanese army invaded Manchuria, threw out the Chinese and set up their own government there.

A

Sent officials to study the problem- took a year

In 1933- it ordered Japan to leave Manchuria

A

Japan refused to leave. Instead they left the league. The league couldn’t agree on sanctions and didn’t want another war so nothing was done.

A

1935- Mussolini got ready to invade Abyssinia, he wanted war and glory

A

He wanted revenge from Abyssinia defeating them earlier.
Abyssinia was positioned right by Italian Somaliland.
Mussolini has seen Japan get away with Manchuria.
Wanted Italy to be a great empire again.

A

Put economic sanctions on. But didnt close the Suez canal so supplies still got through. Italy then conquered Abyssinia by 1936.

Weak- sanctions didnt work, no army
America- USA was not involed
Structure- league was muddled, members couldnt agree

Depression- the depression made countries try and get more land and power
Unsuccessful- the more the league failed, the more people didnt trust it
Members- Italy and Japan betrayed the league. France and Br did nothing to help it
Big Bullies- 1920’s- weak countries. 1930’s- powerful countries
