the chord seventh (scale degree 6) is approached by step or common tone and must resolve down by step to scale degree 5

scale degree 4 resolves down to 3

scale degree 2 usually resolves up to 3 but sometimes resolves down to tonic

scale degree 7 (leading tone) must resolve up to tonic
