Describe the occupation of Korea at the end of WW2.
Korea (previously ruled by Japan) was occupied by the Soviets in the north and the USA in the south.
What did this occupation result in?
Two separate governments were set up, each claiming to be legitimate.
What happened in 1950? What did the UN do?
Forces from North Korea (supported by USSR and China) invaded the south. The UN condemned the action and sent forces to combat the invasion.
How did Britain input in the Korean war?
They sent over 90,000 soldiers, the second biggest contingent after the USA.
What happened in 1953? What did this result in?
- A ceasefire was agreed. Over 1000 British troops had died
- North Korea would be split between a communist North Korea and non-communist South Korea.
What did the Korean War sum up about Britain?
It demonstrated willingness to continue to play a major role in world affairs, despite economic constraints. However, it was also clear that the USA was the greater power.
