The kinetic theory Flashcards
What does the kinetic theory state?
It states that gas particles are in constant motion and exhibit perfectly elastic collisions.
What is an ideal gas?
A hypothetical gas whose molecules shows no interaction and undergo elastic collision with each other and the walls of the container
What are macroscopic properties?
Properties that can be visualized or measured by the naked eye; examples include pressure, temperature, and volume
What are the basic assumptions of the kinetic molecular theory?
- The volume of each particle of a gas is insignificant compared to the volume of the gas itself
- The particles of an ideal gas exert no attractive forces on each other or on their surroundings.
- Gas particles are constantly and randomly moving in straight lines until the collide
- The collisions by gas particles are completely elastic
- The average kinetic energy of gas molecules is directly proportional to the temperature only.
What is an elastic collision?
When two molecules collide, total kinetic energy is conserved.
What does Charles’ Law state?
It states that at a constant pressure, the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its temperature.
What does Boyles’ Law state?
It states that at constant temperature, the absolute pressure and volume of a given mass of confined gas are inversely proportional.
What is quanta?
The smallest possible packet of energy that can be transferred or absorbed
