The Invasion of Europe World War II Flashcards
Invasion of Italy
The Allies first invade Sicily and, step by step, make their slow way through Italy facing fierce German resistance.
The Canadians play a major role in the Italian campaign, committing 91 000 soldiers and suffering over 30 000 total casualties.
Battle of Ortona
The Canadians take the city of Ortona in what was a street by street, house by house battle.
Having secured all their respective objectives, the American, British and Canadian forces successfully force Rome to surrender and succeed in conquering the country of Italy and ousting the German forces in the area
Invasion of Normandy (D-Day)
D-Day is, to this day, the largest amphibious invasion of all time.
The British, Canadian and American forces combined all their power to launch a massive attack against the coastal region of Normandy, France where Hitler’s defenses were fierce.
Juno Beach
Canada was tasked with capturing the largest of the 5 target beaches in Normandy, Juno Beach.
Not only were Canadian forces successful in capturing Juno beach, but they moved further inland than any either the American or British invasion forces on D-Day and were the only invasion force to capture all of their assigned objectives on D-Day.
Liberation of the Netherlands
In the final months of the war, the Canadian Army was tasked with liberating the nation of the Netherlands from Nazi control.
After British and American forces failed to defeat the German forces in the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden, the task was given to the Canadian Army to liberate the city of Antwerp and open its sea port for the Allies to use to supply the front lines heading towards Germany.
Battle of the Scheldt
With their victory at the Battle of Scheldt, the Canadian First Army defeated the Nazi forces near Antwerp and cleared the area of German forces, opening the port of Antwerp for use and allowing supplies to be brought in for the Allied forces.
