Large network that connects smaller networks. Launched in 1969.
World Wide Web
Introduced in 1991. Made possible for the Internet to have graphics, animations, sound, or video.
Web 1.0
Linking existing information. Search engines to locate pages of interest. Many could view, few could create.
Web 2.0
Support dynamic content creation and social interaction. Ability to post videos, images, and text for anyone. Many could view and create content, few would readily locate valuable information
Web 3.0
Identifies relationships between data. More personalization.
Internet=Physical network
Wires, cables, satellites, and rules for exchanging information.
Web=Multimedia interface
View resources available on Internet
Common uses of Internet and web
Communication, shopping, searching, education, and online entertainment.
Internet Service Provider (ISP)
Provide connection for individuals to access internet. Telephone lines, cable, and/or wireless connections (AT&T, Comcast)
Browsers
Programs that provide access to web resources. Connects to remote computers, opens and transfers files, displays text, images, and multimedia. Provides uncomplicated interface to internet and web documents. Safari, Chrome. Once connected to website, document file sent back to computer. Contains HTML
Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
Specific address or location. Two parts: Protocol (https) and Domain Name
Protocol
https. Rules for exchanging data between computers
Domain Name
Indicates specific address where resource is located.
Top-level domain (TLD)
Part following (.) in URL. Identifies type of organization.
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
Separate files reference by or lines inserted into an HTML document that controls the appearance of a web page
JavaScript
Language used with HTML to trigger interactive features (new browser windows, etc.), can auto-fill search request, executed on user’s computer
