The Interactionalist Apprach To SZ Flashcards
1
Q
Outline the view of the interactionist approach
A
- Acknowledges there are biological, psychological and societal factors in SZ
- Biological being genetic vulnerability and psychological being stress and trauma
2
Q
Describe the organism diathesis stress model
A
- Schizogene led to biological development of schziotypic personality, characterised by sensitive to stress
- Chronic stress and SZ mother caused SZ
- Without gene no amount of stress can cause SZ
3
Q
Describe the modern understanding of diathesis
A
- Clear there is no single SZ gene
- Now a range of factors not just genetic such as psychological trauma, and neurosevlolmental model in which trauma effects brain structure
- Could link to epigentics
4
Q
Modern understanding of stress
A
- Anything that can trigger SZ
- Such as Weed (can increase risk up to 7 times)
- Weed interferes with dopamine system
5
Q
Treatment according to interactionalist approach
A
- CBT+ antipsychotics
- Not possible to treat with CBT and only argue for biological causes
- Took longer in US than UK so still common in US to only use antipsychotics
6
Q
Evidence for role of diathesis stress
A
- Cohort study of children adopted from 19,000 Finnish mothers with SZ
- Adoptive parenting style assessed
- Rates of SZ compared to control with no genetic risk
- High conflict and low empathy increased rate of SZ
- Suggests both bio and psycho are important
7
Q
Original too simple
A
- Multiple genes adding to risk so no single gene
2. Diathesis can be lots of things such as sexual abuse and stress can be things like cannabis
8
Q
Study for adopting a interactionalsit approach rach
A
- 315 patients randomly allocated to med+ CBT, med+ supportive counciling and control with just med
- First two showed lower symptoms both no diffence in hospital readmission
