Classification:

  1. ICD-10: 2 negative symptoms and Subtypes
  2. DSM-5: 1 positive and no subtypes

Symptoms (+ve)
Hallucinations : related or not to environment and any sense

Paranoid delusions: persecution or historic figure, possible violent behaviour

A

Avolition: lack drive towards goal. Such as lack of persistence in work or education

Speech poverty:
ICD: negative as loss of fluency and quantity of speech
DSM: speech disorganisation where topic changes mid sentence is a positive symptom

A

Reliability of diagnosis: inter eater reliability:
1. 100 patients using
DSM: 26 and 13
ICD: 44 and 24

Validity: above shows invalid criteria for diagnosis, also:
Co-morbidity: 50% depression and substances abuse, 25% OCD
One single condition? 108 genes

Symptom overlap: SZ and Bipolar have delusions so may receive same diagnosis

Gender bias: females better at interpersonal functioning and so go unnoticed
