The Integumentary System Flashcards
5 major functions of the integument
Protection, Temperature maintenance, synthesis and storage of nutrients, sensory reception, excretion and secretion
The deepest epidermal layer of the skin. The cells of this layer are firmly attached to the basement membrane by hemidesmosomes
Stratum germinativum
The cell layers, or strata, from the basement membrane toward the free surface
Stratum germinativum, the three intermediate layers ( stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, and stratum lucidum), and stratum corneum
The two types of pigments found in the epidermis
Carotene and melanin
Manufacture and store melanin within intracellular vesicles. These vesicles are transferred to the epithelial cells of the stratum germinativum and stratum spinosum. This transfer colors the entire epidermis
Melanocytes
Small amounts of UV radiation is beneficial because it stimulates the synthesis of vitamin ____
D3
Two major components of the integumentary system
Cutaneous membrane and accessory structures
Vitamin D3 is absorbed, modified, and released by the liver and then converted by the kidneys into _____, which is a hormone essential for absorption of calcium and phosphorus by the small intestine
Calcitriol
Most common skin cancer. Originates in the basal layer.
Basal cell carcinoma
Dangerous type of cancer that usually begins from a mole but may appear anywhere on the body. In this condition, melanocytes grow rapidly and metastasize through the lymphatic system.
Melanomas
Two major components of the dermis
Papillary layer and reticular layer
This layer of the dermis supports and nourishes the epidermis. Contains the capillaries and nerves that supply the surface of the skin
Papillary layer
Integument contains two types of exocrine glands. What are they?
Sebaceous glands and sweat glands
