What is stratum corneum function?
-Barrier (keep in water, keeps out foreign particles, resist uv, protection from abrasions)
What is stratum Lucidum function?
-Found on thick skin only
-Reduces friction
-Protects deeper layer of the skin if the stratum corneum is damaged
What is stratum Granulosum function?
-Keratin layer
-Prevents water loss
What is stratum Spinosum function?
-Cells are bound together with desmosomes in order for them to communicate
-When bound together it helps provide structural support
What is stratum Basale function?
-Produce new skin cells (keratinocytes undergo mitosis)
-Responsible for pigment

- Papillary Layer
-Reticular Layer
What is the function of the Dermis?
-Boundary between the dermis and the epidermis
-Dermal papille- Bumps created by the 30 wavy texture of the dermis
What is the function of the dermis- Papillary layer?
-Blood vessels
-Phagocytes
-Nerve endings- light touch
What kind of tissue is the dermis- Papillary layer made of?
Made up of loose connective tissue (areolar)
What is the function of the dermis-Reticular layer?
-Nutrient support blood vessel
-Nerve endings- deep touch (vibration)
What kind of tissue is the dermis- Reticular layer made of?
-Made of dense irregular connective tissue
(With collagen and elastin fibers)
What are the dermis accessory structures?
-Subaceous glands: Produces oils
-Eccrine glands: produces sweat
-Hair follicles with arrector pili muscles
Helps grow hair and creates goosebumps
What are the hypodermis accessory structures?
-Loose connective tissue (adipose)
-Blood vessels
-Nerve endings (and axons)
