The Inspector - Initial reaction to Mr Birling Flashcards
Birling: “I thought you must be. I was an alderman for years – and lord mayor two years ago – and I’m still on the bench – so I know the Brumley police offices pretty well – and I thought I’d never seen you before.”
Inspector: “Quite so.”
Birling makes sure the Inspector recognises his high status as a form of intimidation, however, the Inspector is unimpressed by his boasting. He is more concerned with justice than status.
“(cutting through, massively)”
Doesn’t treat Mr Birling as someone who has more power than him, looks down on him and doesn’t care much about his social status
“I think you remember Eva Smith now don’t you. Mr Birling?”
Belittles him, treats him like a child almost.
