Gerald is used to getting his own way, so the Inspector outright refusing him, is annoying and shocking to Gerald. At the time, rich people were entitled and got “special treatment”, but it turns out the Inspector is not giving Gerald any sort of this treatment.

The three are quick to isolate themselves from the situation and go against the Inspector.
