- ‘scandal’ suggests it would’ve caused public outrage, no longer worried about the news

- Believes he is important enough that people would want to try to make something bad out of him
- Making up ridiculous theories in desperation to prove his innocence

- So desperate to be innocent he is willing to believe a highly unlikely theory
