the influence of inflammatory disease on aesthetics Flashcards
What are the 3 components of oral aesthetics?
Teeth
Gingiva
Lipline
What are the aesthetic components of the gingiva?
Colour Form/shape Position Symmetry Relationship to the upper lip
What is the aesthetic form of gingiva?
Knife edge margins
Smooth transition from tooth to gingiva
Fills embrasures
Light stippling
What are the levels of the upper anterior teeth?
Canine and central incisors gingiva should be at one level
Lateral incisors should be 1.5mm below
What is the influence of inflammatory periodontal disease on aesthetics?
Inflammation
Recession - localised or generalised
Tooth movement - loss of periodontal attachement and occlusal forces pushes teeth to one side diastema or overjet
What are the helpful effects of periodontal treatment on aesthetics?
Reduction of erythema
Reduction in swelling
improvement in contour
What are the unhelpful effects of periodontal treatment on aesthetics?
Recession
Poor contour
Can lose papillae
What is the gingival veneer?
When is it used?
Useful for when periodontal disease or therapy has casued tissue loss in the anterior area
Only indicated if maintenance is good
Good in patients with lots of recession but perio is stabilised
What is the problem with the gingival veneer?
Issues with colour match, the soft material doesnt have a range of colours, hard material is better
What surgery can you do if have high frenum?
Frenectomy
What surgery can you do if have gingival recession?
Gingival grafting
What surgery can you do if have delayed gingival maturation
Crown lengthening
What surgery can you do if have sub-gingival restorative margins
Grafting (Fortoss Perma)
What surgery can you do if have gingival discolouration
Grafting/excision
What is involved in the preoperative assessment?
Initial non-surgival management
Radoigraphic and clinical examination
Patient factors
Consent (purpose/limitations/outcomes)
