How were houses in Victorian Britain?
They were often built back to back. The building was poorly done because the builders wanted to make a quick profit.
Why was it good that houses were cheap in those times?
The poor were able to afford the houses because they were cheap which made it easier to live.
What was the cause of Cholera?
It was caused by drinking dirty water but there was no medical proof of this before the 1830s.
Who was John Snow?
He found out that Cholera entered the body through the mouth. He was a pioneer in the field of anaesthetics. He worked hard for people to listen to him, it took him 10 years.
What do novels do?
They sometimes exaggerate events to make the story exciting.
Who created the flying shuttle?
John Kay. 1733. It was fast but people were losing their jobs.
Who created the spinning Jenny?
James Hargreaves. 1767. Usable in homes but thread was weak.
Who created the water frame?
Richard Arkwright. 1769. It made a strong and tough yarn, needed to be used in a factory.
Who created the spinning mule?
Samuel Crompton. 1779. Strong yarn was made, jobs were at risk
Who created the power loom?
Edmund Cartwright. 1785. Speeds up weaving, jobs at risk and had to be used in a factory.
