A

He was a British soldier who was executed during World War I for cowardice at the age of 25.

17
Q

What is the story of Harry Farr?

A

Harry Farr was a British soldier who was sick during the war and was not permitted to leave his trench when he was extremely sick and needed to leave and go to a hospital. The sergeant wouldn’t give him permission to leave so Harry was known as a coward and was then arrested. He had been executed because of ‘cowardice’.

18
Q

Why was Harry Farr sick/ ill?

A

He had shell shock or PTSD.

19
Q

Why didn’t the sergeant let Harry leave the front line?

A

because he thought Harry was faking it. He didn’t want anyone to fake it as they would loose men.

20
Q

What happened on the first day of the Somme battle?

A

There were lots of casualties and they were fighting in poor conditions.

21
Q

What is the battle of the Somme referred to as?

A

The bloodiest campaign of the First World War.

22
Q

Who was the leader of the Battle of the Somme?

A

Field Marshall Douglas Haig

23
Q

What was the Battle of the Somme about?

A

They wanted to break the Western Front and relieve pressure on the French at Verdun.

24
Q

When did the Somme begin?

A

1st July 1916

25
Q

What was Haig’s plan for the Battle of the Somme?

A

They would start heavily bombing and he planned to have not even a dead rat to be alive, and there were hundreds of rats so that was quite bold. The whistles would signal the attack and planes would spot enemy troops and trenches. They would be victorious, as he though.

26
Q

What was the problem with Haig’s plan of the Battle of the Somme?

A

He was focusing too much on winning and not of the disadvantages of what could happen.

27
Q

How did the Battle of the Somme actually go down?

A

The week long bombing alerted the German’s that there was a war on the way. The low cloud over the battlefield meant that British planes were unable to see where the German troops were. They only gained 5 miles of land but lost thousands of soldiers.

28
Q

What was Field Marshall Douglas Haig’s personality in the war?

A

He didn’t care about the men, he only cared about his plan.

He was weak and had no experience of war.

29
Q

Give evidence on why Haig should have been remembered as the butcher of the Somme.

A

His plan was very stupid and he wasn’t thinking about the possibilities of what could happen if his plan went wrong. Many lives were lost because of his stupidity.

30
Q

Give evidence on why Haig should NOT have been remembered as the butcher of the Somme.

A

Men were going to die either way but the amount of loses could have been stopped if he hadn’t made such a stupid plan.
