High mountain environment, deserts to the west, tropical lowlands to the east.

yes; camelids (alpaca, llama..) for meat, wool, transport, manure.
Who are the Incas?
an ethnic group based in Cuzco, speaks Quechua.
What is the Mita?
the Mita is a rotating labour service imposed on ayllus by the Inca empire, later used by spaniards.
In what ways is the Inca empire an empire ?
conquers and subordinates neighboring societies, quarters divided into provinces, extraction of labour thorugh the mita (form of tribute), state inns and storehouses across the empire, roads and bridges, messengers, Quipus for communication, forced relocation of people, imposition of Quechua and imperial worship of Inca.
