Why water/fluid is important
Carries nutrients around the body
Regulates body temperatures
Helps with digestion as it excretes waste products in the body
Acts as a lubricant for joints
Reduces risk of UTI
How can this need be met by staff in a care home ?
Give fresh drinking water and ensure 6-8 glasses per day is being consumed
Provide water/juice at every meal time
Provide thickened drinks for individuals who are on a SALT diet
How can this need be met at home or at school for children/ infants?
Introduce a baby to drinking from a cup from around 6 months and offer sips of water with meals
Set up a reward system when your child drinks more water
Aim for the child to have between 6-8 glasses of water per day
How can this need be met by adolescents at home/school ?
Choose water over other beverages when eating out.
Carry a water bottle , keep one in you handbag or school bag as well as the fridge at home.
Use frozen fruit in place of ice-cubes.
How can this be met by adults ?
Drink a water based beverage with every meal ( 5-8 cups per day.
Try fruit flavoured water- Infuse water with fruits e.g. lemons.
