Types of socialisation
Primary and Secondary
Primary Socialisation
Socialisation during the early years of childhood which takes places mainly within the family
- Internalisation of a society’s culture where the individuals absorb and accept its shared norms and values
- Play is a good way to learn to share and interact
Secondary Socialisation
During the later years when the family is less involved and other “agencies” are deliberately set up for the socialisation process and begin to exert more and more influence (e.g peer groups, school, sports clubs)
- School is important for development, teaching moral skills, communication skills, cooperation, teamwork and responsibility
Social Control
A concept that refers to the way in which peoples thoughts, feelings, appearance and behaviours are regulated in social systems
Institution
An established organisation founded for religious, educational professional or social purpose
Social Change
An alteration in the social order of society
Gender socialisation
The act of learning to conform culturally defined gender roles through socialisation
