What is Sustainability?
The use of resources in a conservative way. This involves managing are resources well for the well-being of people now and our descendants.
What are the three pillars of sustainability?
Social (People)
Environmental (Planet)
Economic (Profit)
What is Sustainable development?
Meets the needs of present times without compromising the future.
What is sustainable consumption?
Buying goods and services that do not harm the society, the environment or the economy.
Give examples of sustainable consumption? Name 5.
- Use Rechargeable Batteries
- Reduce use of electricity
- Switch off your computer
- Recycle
- Composting
- Shop around for sustainable products e.g. organic
- Dispose of technology products carefully
- Buy energy efficient homes
- Get active: cycle rather than bus
What is ethics?
An ability for someone or something to judge if something is morally right or wrong.
What should an ethical consumer do?Do all ethical consumers have the same conclusions?
The ethical consumer chooses goods and services that meet their needs and reflect their views on what is right and wrong.
However not everyone shares the same values. This depends on our culture and financial circumstances.
What do scarce resources do?
Force consumers to make decisions.

Avoid goods that have a negative impact on the environment, society or animals.
Shop locally to reduce damage to environment from travel costs.
Buy fair trade products when possible.
Ask questions - Where was the product made?, what were the working conditions there?
Consider the impact on the environment at each stage of product from start to shelf.

What is a boycott?
A voluntary act of protest where consumers refuse to buy from or deal with a particular company.
What is Fairtrade?
An alternative approach to trade, based on a partnership between disadvantaged farmers and workers, and people who buy their products.
What is the corporate social responsibility?
Organisations must act to benefit society and or the environment.
What are ethical goods?
Goods which have not harmed any of the three pillars of sustainability.
