The Immune Response Flashcards
What is an antigen ?
When the Immune system is able to recognise and react to foreign material
What are the 2 main types of immunological defence reactions that are triggered by antigens entering the body?
HUMORAL IMMUNE RESPONSE involves substances found in body fluids
CELL-MEDIATED IMMUNE RESPONSE involves cellular components
What is the humoral immune response?
The antigen is attacked by specific proteins released from immune cells
What do immune cells produce?
Antibodies or immunoglobulins
What are the 2 functions of antibodies/ immunoglobulins which are secreted by plasma cells?
Opsonins- eliminate the pathogen
Antitoxins- neutralise toxins
What is cell-mediated immune response?
Does not involve antibodies but the antigen activates macrophages and killer cellls therefore destroying pathogens
T lymphocyte functions?
Memory T cells
T helper cells
T suppressor cells
T cytotoxic cells
Properties of cytokines?
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
Leukocytes
