What scene does book 1 open on?
The Achaian camp on the shore of the Troad.
What does Chryses, priest of Apollo, ask for?
The return of his daughter, Chryseïs, who is Agamemnon’s kidnapped concubine for an adequate ransom.
What happens to the Achaians when Agamemnon rejects Chryses random?
Apollos sends a plague in vengeance for Chryses, who is his priest.
The Achaians call an assembly to sort out the plague. What is decided at the assembly?
That Agamemnon will return Chryseïs and take Achilleus’ prize, Briseïs, as compensation. This leaves Achilleus as the only Achaian without a prize.
After the assembly, what does Achilleus do?
He cries over Briseïs until his mother, Thetis, appears.
After seeing her son cry, what does Thetis do?
She gets Zeus to agree to help Achilleus regain his timaomai (honour) by proving only he can help them win the Trojan war.
After Zeus agrees to help Thetis, what happens on Olympus?
Hera discovers Zeus’ plan and goes a bit mad, but Hephaistos calms the situation down.
