The ideal gas equation Flashcards
What is the constant temperature law? (Boyle’s)
the product of pressure and volume is a constant as long as the temp. remains constant
p x v = constant
What is the constant pressure law? (Charles’)
the volume is proportional to the temperature as long as the pressure remains constant
v ∝ V and V / T = constant
What is the constant volume law? (Gay-Lussac’s)
pressure is proportional to the temperature as long as the volume remains constant
P ∝ T and P / T = constant
What does combining these laws give us?
(P x V) / T = constant for a fixed mass of gas
What is the ideal gas equation?
P (Pa = N m^-2) x V (m^3) = n x R (J K^-1 mol^-1) x T (K)
PV = nRT
What is the gas constant?
R = 8.31 J K^-1 mol^-1
What are the units of pressure?
Pa
What are the units for volume?
m3
