Main reasons why the Hundred Years War broke out (3):
GASCONY - France wanted to take over wine areas. Wine made The British a lot of money.
FLANDERS - Wool was sold in Flanders which made the British a lot of money so France wanted to take over.

What happened in the first phase of the war?
1337-1360
Went well for British, won important battles at Crecy (1346) and Poitiers (1356). Edward III captured Philip IV.
What happened in phase two of the war?
1360-1370
French won back some land.
What happened in the third, and final phase in the war?
Victory at Agincourt (1415) when Henry V became King.
Victory at Agincourt led to conquest of much of France.
17 Year old Joan of Arc led the French back to Victory.
By the end of the War, 1453, English LOST land

The English won as they had longbows while the French had slower crossbows.
Longbows were new forms of weapons and technology.

Large war cost:
- Money
- Lives
Land lost:
- Britain lost all lands in France and never really got it back
What was the long term impact of the Hundred Years War?
Changed the way war was fought:
- Used to be fought using cavalry
- Changed to ranged weapons eg. Longbow
Birth of an English Identity:
- During the war, the English talked about themselves as being English
- The English felt different to the French
- George’s cross was adopted
- Thought of as separate as it is an island
