What caused the war?

A

Spanish had ruled before the Argentines
Argentina’s economy was having severe problems
Unemployment was high, banks were fauling and prices rising
Margaret Thatcher - ‘‘We have to recover them for the people on them are British and British stock and they still owe allegiance to the Crown and want to be British

What happened

A

Britain sent a task force of over 100 ships and around 28000 troops to the islands and declared a 320-kilometre exclusion zone around them
In total 750 Argentines and 255 British troops were killed

A

War was a huge boost to popularity of Margaret Thatcher
US Pres. Ronald Reagen offered to loan Britain a US warship
Boost in patriotic feeling in Britain
Relationship between US and Britain strengthened and remained in place since
International respect for Britain particularly after failure of the Suez campaign in 1956
