What does the humanistic approach focus on?
Personal growth
What’s humanists beliefs surrounding freewill?
They believe that our actions are not determined by biological factors or our environment, but that we ultimately choose our behaviours freely
What’s self actualisation?
The point at which an individual has reached their full potential
What does Maslows hierarchy of needs suggest?
That before satisfying the need for self actualisation, the individual lost meet more basic needs, progressing to higher needs
What are the stages of Maslows hierarchy of needs?
- Physiological
- Safety
- Love/belonging
- Esteem
- Cognitive
- Aesthetic
- Self actualisation
What does Rodgers suggest?
That each person had a self concept and an ideal self
What’s congruence?
How close the self concept and ideal self are
What happens if there is a big difference between the self concept and ideal self (incongruence)?
Self actualisation can’t be achieved
What are conditions of worth?
The requirements an individual feels they need to meet in order to be loved
What’s humanistic counselling like?
It had client centred therapy, and it attempts to help the client achieve congruence and provides unconditional positive regard
