The cognative approach Flashcards
What does the cognitive approach believe?
That behaviour is the result of conscious and unconscious information processing
What are internal mental processes?
A series of stages of mental information processing
What are theoretical models?
Flow charts showing how information flows and is processed in a mental system, such as memory or attention. These models produce theories testable by experiments.
How does the cognitive approach compare minds to computers?
It suggests that computers also have inputs like the brain has senses and outputs like behaviour - this is called the computer model
What is the schema?
A cognitive mental framework of how people/objects work
What does the schema do?
It makes assumptions on how to behave and think, based off prior experiences.
What can am incorrect schema lead to?
Stereotypes, prejudice and bias
What has the emergence of cognitive neuroscience led to?
The development of new brain scanning techniques like FMRI have allowed thought processes to be linked to patterns of activity in the brain
