The Human Eye Flashcards
Cornea
Transparent layer in front of the eye which refracts light through the pupil and onto the lens
Sclera
The hard outer layer of the eye which helps it hold it’s shape.
Conjunctiva
The membrane at the front of the eye which produces mucous to lubricate the eye
Aqueous humour
Watery liquid at the front of the eye between the cornea and the iris, which replenishes the cornea and the lens.
Iris
The ring of muscles which adjusts the size of the pupil to regulate the amount of light entering the eye
Pupil
A dark, circular aperture which let’s light enter the eye
Lens
A flexible unit which helps refract light travelling through the eye and focus it onto the retina
Ciliary body
Changes the size of the lens
Vitreous humour
Transparent jelly, like liquid in the eye which helps hold its shape and helps pass through and onto the retina
Retina
The screen on which the image is formed and where light is converted into nerve impulses.
Tapetum/choroid
The layer between the sclera and the retina.
Blind spot
The area in front of the optic nerve with no light receptors, resulting in a gap in ones field of vision.
Optic nerve.
Sends nerve impulses from the eye to the brain.
What type of lens is present in the eye?
Convex lens
