- In 1055 he was made earl of Northumbria however
- He was seen as an outsider from the south
- Further more when they challenged him and his authority, he dealt with it very heavy handedly making him unpopular

The Thegns of Northumbria rebelled against him in October 1065
- they occupied York and killed Tostigs official
What happened after the rebellion of 1065?
They wanted Morcar to replace Tostig
Harold Godwinson went up and spoke to the rebels and he realised Tostig couldn’t control them
He replaced him with Morcar to meet the rebels demands
