Who is attacking and how did Harold get warned ?
-Tostig+ Harold Hardrada of Norway, land and set up camp in south York
- Harold G was in south England and received the news fire beacon fires
Who are the ones that take action ,what is the size of their army and what do they do ?
- Earls of Northumbria and Mercia Edwin and Morcar
- they amass an army of around 5,000 men strong
- form a defensive shield walk on high ground
Why did they choose the specific location ?
- Edwin and Morcar chose it because of a ford 400 meters wide, a marsh laying to the east and the River Ouse to the west
- THEIR FLANKS ARE PROTECTED
What was the size of the attacking army ?
Around estimated 6,500 men
How does the fighting go ?
1.Initially Edwin and Morcar are winning
2. Hardradas troops at the centre attack hard pushing them back and forcing them back
3. Hardrada orders his troops to outflank them using an old Roman road
4. English forces are driven back some drown in the river Ouse others are killed
5. Survivors flee and Edwin+ Morcar are still alive but the army is destroyed
What happens next ? ( think York)
York surrenders promising to help him against Harold G
Harold returns to his ships and base
His next step was to meet the leaders of York and agreed they would hand over hostages, soldiers and money to him
